Issues in Research and Practice
Here at NICHCY we are forever gathering information
of potential use to those working hard to educate and care for children
with disabilities. In this new section we'll pass along some of
the best conceptual and practical resources we come across that
relate to current issues in research and practice.

As
Autism Diagnoses Grow, So Do Number of Fad Treatments, Researchers
Say
Ineffective or even dangerous fad treatments
for autism, always a problem, seem to be growing more pervasive,
according to researchers who studied the problem.

Family
Involvement in Elementary School Children's Education
As in the period of early childhood, family
involvement processes are critical for elementary-school-age children's
learning and development. However, in elementary school, the specific
activities and nature of these processes change. For the first
time in a child's development, the federal government affords the
child and family specific rights and responsibilities—and
holds the school accountable for providing them.

A
Collective Effort: Weighing in on the Evidence Base in Education
A number of organizations have recognized
and responded to the need from within the education community to
use scientific research to guide practice -- their efforts are summarized
here along with links to their respective web sites.

Creating
Environments That Work for All Youth: Increasing the Use of Evidence-Based
Strategies by Special Education Teachers
With a goal of increasing the use of evidence-based
practices in special education programs and improving student outcomes,
a research demonstration project was developed through a unique
partnership of special educators, parents, administrators, and investigators.
This brief reports on the method, implementation, and initial findings
from this project.

The
Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools
The 38th Annual Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll
of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools shows how Americans
view issues facing public schools such as No Child Left Behind,
charter schools, the achievement gap, and teacher retention. A separate
brief discusses the policy implications of this year's Phi Delta
Kappa/Gallup Poll.

A
Conceptual View of Implementation
The mission of the National Implementation
Research Network (NIRN) is to close the gap between science and
service by improving the science and practice of implementation
in relation to evidence-based programs and practices. This article
is an excerpt from a larger overview of what it takes to successfully
implement evidence-based practices.

System
Reform to Reach 98 Percent
A system that unifies general education and
special education through an ample array of supports for children
will enable districts to reach 98 percent of students.

Evidence-Based
Practice—Wanted, Needed, and Hard to Get
On the topic of evidence-based practice,
there is one point of agreement: The law says teachers must use
evidence-based teaching practices (EBPs) to ensure their students
receive the highest quality instruction. From there the discussion
splinters into a myriad of issues, ranging from how much evidence
is needed to give a practice credibility to acceptable research
methods to the lack—or abundance--of research on students with special
needs.
